On July 9th, 1946, we launched the suborbital V-2 Rocket with fruit flies aboard, making fruit flies the first living and sentient organisms intentionally launched into space by humans. In returning home safely, they paved the way for further human space exploration. Here we honor these flies and their mission to space. Thanks, space flies, we salute you!
